I graduated with a BA in media communication…perhaps not the first degree that comes to mind when you think about working as an editor. However, my background, from internships in publishing houses to working at a literary magazine, combined with my communication degree, gives me a unique approach to editing.

As people, we are drawn to story, in whatever medium we may find it. With media communication it’s all about story. Specifically, it is about creating stories that engage people’s attention and hearts.  An obvious difference between a story in a novel and a story within media communication is that communication is much more technical.

As a writer myself, I understand how daunting and difficult writing a novel can be. So first off, my hat's off to you for completing or starting the journey of writing a novel; it's a lot of work. But if you’ve started a novel, you are already a part of the 15% of people who actually decided to commit. And if you’ve finished your story, then you're in the 3% of people who do. All that to say is, once you're done, you're left with a large document, a great story, and some scenes you might not remember writing. It may be hard to keep things straight in your head; you know the plot, the characters, the story, but you can’t quite be sure if it makes sense or if it will resonate with your reader.

This is where the technical approach comes in. My edits aren’t just “this is confusing” or “I would have liked to know more about this.” My edits aim to get to the root of your story and build up from the roots. I want to look at what in your story your reader will relate to. I’m guessing most of us have never been given the task of destroying an evil ring, like Bilbo Baggins. But all of us, at some point in life, can relate to the overwhelming anxiety he felt, thinking he wasn’t up for the task, or the simple fear of leaving something he was familiar with to venture out into the unknown.

And that’s what makes a good story: not necessarily the plot, though having a good plot helps, but how the readers identify and learn from the characters in your book. My goal as your editor is to find the true story your plot and characters are trying to tell, and then help you use your unique voice to highlight and elevate it.
